Club History

HISTORY

From Sand to Sidelines: Greystones United AFC began in 1923, when a group of local
teenagers formed the town’s first football team. With no local transport, they travelled by
boat and tram to matches - driven purely by passion for the game.

Growing the Game: After joining the Wicklow League in 1947, the club weathered ups and
downs but steadily grew through the efforts of dedicated volunteers. By the 1990s, it had
climbed the ranks of the Leinster Senior League, earning major honours and national
recognition.

A New Era Begins: In 1987, another chapter started with the creation of Greystones United
FC, formed from a merger of senior and schoolboy teams. The club quickly expanded,
developing a strong youth programme and senior presence across regional leagues.

A Home at Woodlands: In 2003, the club secured a permanent home at Woodlands. Within
a few years, the grounds were transformed into a modern football hub with a full-size all-
weather pitch, clubhouse, and multiple playing fields - still the heart of the club today.

United in Name & Spirit: In 2015, Greystones AFC and Greystones United FC came
together to form Greystones United AFC. The merger united the strengths and traditions of
both clubs under one banner, one vision, and one vibrant community.

The Future: Now one of Ireland’s largest football clubs, Greystones United AFC has over
1,100 players across 60+ teams. We offer football for all ages and abilities - boys, girls,
women, and men - while proudly holding the FAI Club Mark for excellence in coaching,
governance and child welfare.

With a strong focus on growing the women’s game and a clear development pathway to the
national level, our mission is simple: to make football accessible to everyone and build a club
where every player has a place to grow, compete, and belong.
